EDITORIL: Police encourage citizens to be watchful, alert to help combat crime

Last Tuesday a crowded room full of concerned citizens listened to law enforcement officers talk about crime in Selma and Dallas County.

One of the most important things Capt. Mike Granthum and Capt. Natasha Fowlkes mentioned to the Old Town Neighborhood Watch was that they can’t solve crimes on their own.

There are only so many police officers on the street, and they can’t be in all places at once, so it is important for citizens to pitch in and be an extra set of eyes and ears.

Fowlkes said there are currently nine active watches in Selma, and we think that number should grow.

Neighbors should know one another and look out for each other. Police cannot do it on their own, so we encourage everyone to step up. If you see something, report it to the police.
