Edmundite Missions celebrates 80 years with mass, gala

The Edmundite Missions kicked off a week-long celebration of its 80th anniversary Monday night with a Gospel singing competition.

Other events scheduled for this week include:

Tuesday, Nov. 7, 11:30 a.m.,  “Lunch and Learn” with Father Richard Myhalyk, SSE of the Society of St. Edmund.

Father Richard will give a detailed history of the Edmundite Missions and a delicious lunch will be catered by the Edmundite Missions: Selma Kitchens, a social enterprise of the Edmundite Missions.

The event will be held in the Vaughn Room at the Selma Public Library (1103 Selma Avenue, Selma)

Thursday, Nov. 9, 4:30 p.m., a celebratory mass, with His Excellency Thomas J. Rodi, archbishop of the Archdiocese of Mobile Presiding.

Assisting will be homilist the Very Rev. Stephen Hornat, SSE-superior general of the Society of St. Edmund and special guest choir, St. Peter Claver Church from New Orleans, Louisiana.

Mass will be held at (Queen of Peace Historic Church, 309 Washington Street, Selma)

The Joy and Hope Gala Dinner and award presentation will be held immediately after at the Selma Carl C. Morgan Convention Center (211 Washington Street, Selma, AL).

Award recipients of the Gaudium et Spes Award (Joy and Hope) include Mr. and Mrs. Alston Fitts; Mrs. Nancy Sewell and in memory of Andrew Sewell; Bernard Simelton, president of the Alabama NAACP; and recipient and keynote speaker State Rep. Prince Chestnut.

The award is given out annually to those who have in word and in deed helped advance and support the work of the Edmundite Missions through their lives of faithful service to those in need.
