Despite cold, rainy weather, people enjoy fall festivities on Water Avenue

It was unfortunate we had rain Saturday morning and chilly weather all day. But those who did brave the January temperatures had a great time of the first Oktober on the Avenue.

The event was put on by Main Street Selma, the city of Selma and local businesses and other organizations.

Those who did attend said how much they enjoyed the festival, which included German food and drinks, arts and crafts, vendors, games, a pet parade, and fall decorating contests.

We hope the event can become an annual festival. Selma has needed a fall event since Market Days. There’s no reason why something of that scale can’t eventually return.

We’ve seen what a dedicated group that is committed to something can do.

The Alabama River Chili Cookoff in March is a great example of that.

The Oktober on the Avenue was a great way to spend Saturday and lead up to another event, the Kathryn Tucker Windham Alabama Tale Tellin’ Festival to keep people downtown all day.

Kudos to those who had a part in pulling everything together, and good luck next year. And here’s hoping for a sunny and 72-degree day.
