Later this month the town of Orrville will continue its fight against breast cancer with the third annual walk, run and bike for a cure event.

Mayor Louvenia Lumpkin said many people in the town have been affected by the disease or know someone who has been affected by it, so the town wanted to show its support during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

“Cancer doesn’t have a particular person or age group. Cancer affects everybody. Either you’re a cancer patient, a cancer survivor or you’ve got somebody in your family or someone you know that had cancer,” Lumpkin said. “It means a lot to the town of Orrville just helping out and giving back to help the ones that need it the most.”

Lumpkin, who has lost family members and friends to cancer herself, said the month of October and this event mean something special.

“It means a lot to me just being able to help the ones in need. It makes me feel good that Orrville is such a small town and gets such good participation,” Lumpkin said. “It’s just something that every community, whether big or small, should get involved with.”

The event is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 28 at 9 a.m. at the Orrville Community Center. Registration, which is $25 for a t-shirt and entry into one of the races, starts at 8 a.m. Participants can walk or run one or three miles or bike five or 10 miles.

Lumpkin said the event, which started in 2015, has grown over the first two years, and she hopes to see it continue to grow.

“It just brings tears to my eyes when I see people young and old getting out and walking or just coming. Sometimes people can’t walk or run or ride a bicycle, but they still come out,” Lumpkin said. “That means a whole lot to me.”

The money raised from the event will go to the American Cancer Society.
