A look at local teams who played on the road this week.

Ellwood at Highland Home

The Ellwood Christian Eagles lost on the road 55-8 to the Highland Home Flying Squadron Friday night.

Highland Home jumped out to a 55-0 lead at halftime, according to Ellwood head coach Mike Stokes.

“Our defense just wasn’t able to do anything,” he said. “We still have to play better than what we have been.”

The Eagles were able to score on a 22-yard run by Jacobie Smiley in the third quarter, but that was their only score of the game.

Ellwood plays Loachapoka next Friday at home.

Keith at Aliceville

The Keith High School Bears were neck and neck with the Aliceville Yellow Jackets, but a few big plays led to their 34-14 loss.

“For three and a half quarters, we played really good football,” Bears head coach Harry Crum said. “We just didn’t finish.”

Aliceville scored first, but the Bears answered back with a 50-yard touchdown pass from Jared Edwards to Martavis Hatcher.

The Yellow Jackets returned a kickoff at the end of the first half to make the score 14-6, according to Crum.

Edwards scored the second touchdown for the Bears on a one-yard quarterback sneak. Unfortunately, big plays from Aliceville including a 50-yd touchdown run and a big interception sealed the game.

The Bears play against Billingsley at home next Friday.

Southside at Prattville Christian

The Southside High School Panthers earned their first win of the season by defeating the Prattville Christian Panthers 26-21.

Southside head coach Daniel Flowers switched back to his quarterback from last season, Gneil Johnson, and it paid off. According to Flowers, Southside was down all game. In the fourth quarter, the team was down 21-12.

Malik Johnson, the former quarterback, still had a role to play.

He scored both a rushing touchdown and caught the game-winning touchdown.

However, the game was won by the defense.

The defense was able to turn the ball over twice in the fourth quarter, including a big interception that gave the offense another chance.

“The defense saved the game,” Flowers said.

Southside will face Beulah High School at home next Friday.

Dallas County at Calera

The Dallas County Hornets lost 53-7 to Calera High School Friday night.

Running back Calvin Starks scored the lone touchdown for the Hornets on a kickoff return in the first half, according to Hornets head coach Cliff Matthews.

“We just didn’t play well,” he said. “We made turnovers, couldn’t move the ball on offense and couldn’t get a stop on defense. We didn’t play well on offense or defense tonight.”

The Hornets next game will be on the road against Selma High School next Friday.

The 2017 game didn’t live up to the hype of last year’s affair, which the Eagles won on a last second field goal as timed expired.
