The Selma Art Guild is having a book making workshop on Sept. 23, taught by Montgomery based art teacher Maria Freedman.

“One of the things that we do at the art guild is teach and educate folks,” co-president Karen Weir said. “Not only about art in general or different types of art, but also how to make it. Our workshops help to do that.”

Freedman, who is also a board member with the guild, has been teaching art for a long time, according to Weir. This will be the first time she is leading the book making workshop in Selma.

“She is coming over with all the materials included to teach book making of different types that you could use for journals or for drawings,” Weir said.

“It’s going to be interesting, and when you leave, you’ll have a couple little booklets that you will have hand made.”

The Selma Art Guild has done plenty of workshops before, but this will be the first one on book making.

“Maria is a specialist in book making, and she’s on our board,” Weir said. “We have given a huge variety of workshops like water colors and oils, and occasionally we will have some crafts type of art.”

Freedman is bringing all the materials necessary for the workshop, so the only thing people need to do is register for attendance.

“This is also a fun thing to do with children or teenagers,” Weir said. “A lot of times at workshops, parents or grandparents come with a child, so that’s kind of a fun idea too.”

The event runs from 10 a.m. through 2 p.m. and costs $75 to attend. Email Weir at weirkaren688@gmail.com to register for a spot in the workshop because space is limited.

“I’m encouraging people to sign-up early if they want to do this,” she said. “ It’s really beautiful.”
