There’s just under a month left to register for the YMCA of Selma-Dallas County youth soccer program.

Registration opened on July 13, and will continue until Aug. 31.

The only requirements for signing up is to fill out the registration form at the YMCA’s front desk and pay the fee. The cost is $45 for members and $60 for non-members.

This is a fun, good time and family sport,” program director Vanessa Felts said. “It’s a well-rounded activity.”

The YMCA will provide the jersey’s, but the kids will need their own black shorts, socks and cleats. The league is co-ed and split into four different age divisions: 3-5 year olds, 6-8 year olds, 9-12 year olds and 13-15 year olds.

The YMCA will depend on parent-volunteer coaches to help instruct the teams on the fundamentals of soccer.

“Looking bad at previous enrollment in the sport, I’ve noticed that it’s a big family sport,” Felts said. “There are several different ages, and I’ve seen where the dad will coach the youngest team while the mom coaches the older team.”

Felts said that 10 newcomers have already registered for the upcoming season. Felts said that around 60 kids participated in the soccer league last year and she expects a similar outcome this year.

“I see the popularity starting to pick-up,” she said. “It went from one year where the YMCA only had 30 playing, to last year where they had about 60. It does look like people are starting to catch on and starting to venture out and explore the sport as well.”

Ideally, Felts said she’d like to split the teams up into groups of six to eight so everyone will have the opportunity to play. Practice will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays starting on Sept. 5. The games begin on Sept. 26, and will run through the end of October. All practices and games will take place at Lion’s Fair Park.

Registration for the league will end at the end of the month, and Felts is encouraging as many people as possible to come and join the YMCA league.

“If you’ve ever wondered or was curious about this sport, I think this would be a great opportunity for kids to see that something they were interested in and explore it,” she said. “It’s a great sport, and a lot of people are playing it. We have it at Concordia College, and I think it would be great to get the youth involved in possibly opening doors for future scholarship potential.”
