EDITORIAL: Football players, cheerleaders need votes, support from community

It’s that time of year. The 2017 edition of our football preview magazine, Gridiron, will soon be available.

We need your help in deciding which local athletes will grace this year’s cover.

Every year for the past five or so years, a football player and cheerleader from all seven high schools have been paired for a chance to appear on the cover via a Facebook contest. Last year’s contest winner, one a Meadowview Christian player and Keith cheerleader, received a total of more than 1,300 out of 5,900 votes.

“This is a fun way to engage the community, and get everyone excited for football season,” Times-Journal sports reporter Thomas Scott said. “It’s exciting to see how much support the football players and cheerleaders have behind them.”

Here are the pairings for this years’ contest – Meadowview Christian football player Chris Wilson and Selma High cheerleader Antanique Tubbs; Morgan Academy football player Sam Plummer and Southside cheerleader Kabresha Fikes; Dallas County football player Octavious Palmer and Keith cheerleader A’Janae Moseley; Selma High football player Gabriel Wade and Morgan Academy cheerleader Haley Smitherman; Southside football player Malik Johnson and Ellwood cheerleader Gabby Crum; Ellwood football player Jamel Phillips and Dallas County cheerleader Nia Brooks; and Keith football player Kywoine Thomas and Morgan Academy cheerleader Sara Catherine Plummer.

Voting started Monday and goes through Friday at 5 p.m. To vote, visit The Selma Times-Journal on Facebook and “like” which photo you want to see on the cover. The portrait with the most likes will win.

Liking the photo album will not count as a vote for the student athletes. Shares and comments do not count as votes either.
