A 52-year-old Selma man was sentenced in federal court Friday on gun charges.

According to acting United States Attorney Steve Butler, Roosevelt Jones, who had three prior convictions for being a felon in possession of a firearm, was sentenced to nearly two years in prison, which will be followed by three years of supervised release.

Jones was serving concurrent terms of supervised release from two prior convictions when he was arrested for his most recent charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm.

According to a release from Butler’s office, Jones was stopped by an Alabama State Trooper in Dallas County for attempting to avoid a driver’s license checkpoint.

“The trooper noticed that he had a gun on the back seat of his vehicle and determined that Jones had criminal history,” the release read.

Jones was indicted in February of this year for the charge and pleaded guilty in April.

Jones was sentenced by United States District Court Judge Kristi K. Dubose.

She also revoked his concurrent terms of supervised release on the old cases and ordered a six-month term of imprisonment to run concurrently with the 21-month sentence.

A fine was not imposed, but Jones was ordered to pay $100 in special assessments.

The case was investigated by the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

The prosecution of the case was handled by Gloria Bedwell, assistant U.S. Attorney with the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
