The Selma Charity League is offering the community a chance to show off their Selma and pop culture knowledge while also giving back with its Trivia Night at The Sand Bar.

The league is hosting the trivia night to raise money for their new partners, the Distinguished Young Women scholarship program.

“We just started partnering this year with the Distinguished Young Women program, and they needed help raising funds for their program that is in September, and we said that we would help raise money and came up with Trivia Night,” said Anne Wilkinson, president of the charity league.

Wilkinson said they chose the program because it offers young women the opportunity to compete for scholarships for college to further their education.

“We wanted a new project to take on and thought that helping and mentoring the younger adults in Selma and Dallas County would be a great opportunity,” Wilkinson said. “They’ll all be competing for scholarships for college, so knowing that all this money goes to that and to help their education is really important to us.”

As of Thursday afternoon, they had eight teams signed up to compete.

“We still have a few spots open if anyone wants to join and make a team,” Wilkinson said.

Teams can have up to six people and the cost is $10 per player. Wilkinson said participants can purchase lifelines for $5 to help them with difficult questions. There will be prizes throughout the night and a case prize for the winning team at the end.

Wilkinson said there will be around 100 questions and they will revolve around Selma, naming a tune along with random trivia.

“If people don’t want to play and feel like they’re not really good at trivia, they’re welcome to come and just support and listen and hang out,” Wilkinson said.

The trivia competition is open to people of all ages, but will be tailored for high school and up.

“We are very excited,” Wilkinson said. “We’ve been planning and coming up with fun trivia questions and we’re looking forward to it.”

The competition will take place Thursday, July 20 from 6-8 p.m. at the Sand Bar. Those interested in participating or registering can email charityleagueselma@gmail.com.
