When a truck was used to smash through the front of a convenience store in Dallas County on June 28, investigators believed the crime was related to similar incidents at two Lowndes County stores.

Now that a second truck believed to be used in incidents in Hayneville and Mosses has been found, investigators haven’t been able to tie them together.

“The truck they found over in the Mosses area is a totally different truck. We haven’t gotten any leads or anything yet,” said Captain Mike Granthum with the Dallas County Sheriff’s Department.

On June 28, a stolen utility truck from Montgomery was used to smash through the front of Z-Tec General Store in Safford. A rope or chain was then hooked to the ATM to pull it out of the store. The truck was then used as a battering ram to smash open the ATM. The truck and battered ATM were found nearby that same day.

The truck believed to be used in Mosses and Hayneville was recently recovered by the Hayneville Police Department in a wooded area near the town park.

“I got a call from one of my confidential informants that informed me where [the truck] was,” said Hayneville Police Chief Kelvin Mitchell.

The truck used in Safford was a large utility truck, but the truck that was recovered in Hayneville is much smaller. Mitchell said just like the truck used in Dallas County, the one his department recovered was stolen from Montgomery.

Mitchell said the truck was reported stolen from Southern Sash Supply Company.

The truck used in the Dallas County incident was reported stolen from a Montgomery propane company near Montgomery Regional Airport.

Mitchell said the truck was used to smash through the front of Hayneville Associated Grocers around 2 a.m.

“This particular pickup truck came through the parking lot, based on the video, left after sizing it up, returned in maybe a few minutes, pulled up and backed into the front door of the building,” Mitchell said. “It crushed it and knocked the door down and windows, bricks and everything.”

Mitchell said two men dressed in black ran inside the store and attempted to move the ATM but were unsuccessful. Mitchell said a similar incident happened in Mosses weeks later, but the people responsible were successful in removing the ATM.

Phone calls to the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Department requesting details on the Mosses incident were not returned Wednesday.

While the incidents were similar and happened around the same time, Granthum said no other evidence has been able to link them together.

“We’re not linking them at all yet,” he said. “It’s two different trucks and everything.”

No arrests have been made in any of the three cases.
