The second annual Senior Citizens’ Prom is set for Friday, June 23 at the Carl Morgan Convention Center. The event will run from 6-8 p.m.

Councilman Samuel Randolph said the event is a great way for seniors to come enjoy downtown.

“The Senior Citizens’ prom is going to be a dance and a dinner for senior citizens to come out and just be able to enjoy themselves,” he said.

A DJ will be there to provide music all night that is sure the keep the convention center rocking.

“He’s going to be playing some oldies music from back in the 60s, 50s and 40s,” Randolph said.

The theme for the prom is “Sunset in Paradise.”

“Our theme is the same theme from last year,” Randolph said. “We just wanted them to be in paradise. So, this year will be decorated like you are on an island somewhere just having a good time.”

This event is a part of the Selma One Hot Summer Series, and all citizens age 55 and older are invited to attend.

“It gives the seniors an opportunity to be part of the Selma One Hot Summer Series.”

Randolph said that there will be door prizes, gifts and they will crown a king and queen.

A committee has been selected to choose the king and queen.

“People that we feel are most active at the program,” he said,” (People who are) dancing and just be friendly with everyone; those are going to be the type of people that we are looking to be the king and the queen.”

The dress code for the event is semiformal, but it is encouraged not to purchase a new outfit for the prom.

“Just come like you’re going to church Sunday morning,” Randolph said. .

Last year the program was successful with 200 people coming out to enjoy it.

“A lot of people have (asked) that we continue it,” he said. “They said they had a great time, and it was an opportunity for them to come out of the house and meet with people in their age range.”

Randolph said that he is excited for the program to return for a second year.

“A lot of people say there is nothing to do downtown, so we are giving people an opportunity to come downtown,” he said. “Our main goal is to get citizens of Selma more excited about what downtown Selma has to offer them.”

The Selma City Council is partnered with the Edmundite Missions, and the event will be totally cost free.

Randolph and the rest of the council have worked hard to make this year’s prom even better than the last.

“We are just excited about being able to come there and fellowship with our seniors,” he said.
