Haddox Jowers (Son) Autrey

Haddox Jowers (Son) Autrey died peacefully in his sleep on Saturday, June 10, 2017, in Pensacola, Florida. Haddox was born July 28, 1916, in Pine Hill and moved to Selma as a young adult.

He married Evelyn Louise Chandler on Dec. 27, 1939, and they enjoyed 70 years of marriage before her death on July 2, 2010. Other family members who predeceased Mr. Autrey were his grandson, Mark Autrey; and daughter-in-law, Barbara Autrey. Surviving are his children, Kenneth (Pamela) Autrey, Larry Autrey and Linda Garris; grandchildren, Debbie (Danny) Farmer, Kathy (Andrew) Nelson, Morgan (Hunter) Bailey, Laurie Kittrell, Mike (Tommie) Autrey, Valerie (Mandy) Autrey and Grant Garris; as well as 15 great-grandchildren; and 18 great-great grandchildren.

Mr. Autrey grew up during the Great Depression and was only able to complete eighth grade, yet he was a self-taught and successful businessman. He was manager for Dixie Highway Express until bought out and later was vice president of LeaseWay Preferred Trucking Company, all based in Selma. He was very active in the Lions Club and the Central Alabama Fair, and was a member of the Barrett Road United Methodist Church.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, June 12 at Lawrence Brown Service Funeral Home with visitation at 1 p.m. and funeral service at 2 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Barrett Road United Methodist Church.
