Investigators with the Selma Police Department are still piecing together information on a Sunday morning shooting outside of a crowded Selma nightclub.

According to Lt. Tory Neely with department’s Criminal Investigation Division, officers responded to Doc’s, a nightclub on the 1200 block of West Highland Avenue, just after 2 a.m. The original call came in as shots fired in the area.

A 32-year-old Selma man was shot in the thigh after an altercation in the parking lot. Neely said there was a crowd at the nightclub when the shots rang out.

“We don’t have a whole lot [of information],” Neely said. “There was some sort of altercation. Guns were brought out, and some shooting occurred, and he was struck in the thigh.”

Neely said the victim was driven to the emergency room at Vaughan Regional Medical Center in a private vehicle.

“He was transported to UAB Hospital, and then he was transported to Baptist South, and he’s since been released from Baptist South,” Neely said.

Spent shell casings from a handgun were collected from the scene as evidence, and at this time investigators believe there was only one shooter involved in the incident.

Neely said the department has not had much cooperation from witnesses or people who may have seen what took place that morning. Investigators said it is still unclear what led to the shooting, or if the 32-year-old was even the intended target. Neely said investigators have not been able to identify a suspect at this time, but they are continuing the investigation.

While nightclubs are required to have surveillance video, Neely said there wasn’t any video to help paint a picture of what happened Sunday morning.
