The first weekend in June is going to be a busy one in Selma with plenty to do for everyone.

The Selma Farmers Market opens for the first time this year bright and early Saturday morning at 6 a.m. Fresh, local produce will be sold at Bloch Park every Saturday, Tuesday and Thursday mornings from June through November.

Art galleries throughout downtown Selma will open their doors for visitors starting at 8 a.m. until noon for the First Morning Art Walk. There will be several galleries and studios open. The walk starts at Anne Strand’s Designs located at 26 Broad St. and continues from there. Maps will be available at each location.

The Humane Society of Central Alabama and Selma’s Purrrfect Pals will have an adoption day from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Selma Animal Shelter. Dog adoptions are $100, and adult cat adoptions are $25.

For those that love history, Old Cahawba Archaeological Park is having a Bring Your Own Bike Tour from 10-11 a.m. Visitors can take a guided four-mile bike ride through the park and learn about the state’s first permanent capital. Riders will get to see abandoned streets, overflowing wells and ruins from what was once one of the busiest towns in Alabama. The tour is $8 per person, and people are encouraged to bring water and snacks for the ride.

The By the River Center for Humanity also has several things going on Saturday with storytelling and a drumming circle. Activities will start at 8 a.m. and conclude at 6 p.m.

To end the day, people can head over to the Riverfront Park Amphitheater for a movie in the park. The city is teaming up with the Selma to Montgomery Historic Trail for movie nights in the park for the month of June. “The Secret Life of Bees” is this Saturday’s featured movie.

“We hope people bring their families and friends, bring a picnic, bring chairs and blankets, enjoy the movie with us, enjoy being outside and learn something,” said Theresa Hall with the National Park Service. “I think for some people it might be a new experience, watching a movie under the stars.”

Gates will open at 7 p.m., and the movie will start at 7:30 p.m. The movie is free of charge. People are encouraged to bring food and drinks to enjoy during the movie.
