There’s plenty to do in Selma this Mother’s Day weekend to keep busy and give mom a great day.

Friday and Saturday, from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m., The Selma Portrait Project show by Kathryn Mayo will be open to the public in the old Sneakers building on Broad Street.

Mayo has photographed more than 60 individuals and couples from Selma for her project with a unique photographic technique that was used in the mid to late 1800s, called a wet plate collodion ambrotype.

Mayo is a professor of photography at Cosumnes River College in California and has taken a sabbatical for the last four months to photograph people through The Selma Portrait Project.

From 10 a.m. until noon Saturday, The Selma and Dallas County Chamber of Commerce is holding a community shred-it day at the Centre for Commerce, located at 912 Selma Avenue.

Safe Harbor is holding a bass tournament at the Selma City Marina from daylight until 3 p.m. Saturday with guaranteed payouts of $3,000 for first place, $1,000 for second place, $500 for third place, $300 for fourth and $200 for fifth. Also on Saturday is Wannabe Rescued’s fourth annual Butts for Mutts barbecue from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Lannie’s BBQ No. 2. Smoked Boston butts or turkey breasts are $35 each. For more information call Margie Johnson at (334) 412-8041.

On Mother’s Day, May 14, The Walton Theater Selma is having dinner and a movie from 1-2 p.m. for $10 per person. To reserve a table, call (334) 505-9315.

After the movie, the city of Selma Mayor’s Office is having a Mother’s Day Concert: Jazz in the Park at the Selma amphitheater.

“We’re celebrating mothers here in the city of Selma to show appreciation and love for our mothers,” said Selma Mayor Darrio Melton. “So often, we see that our mothers play a huge role in our lives…. Mothers are the anchors for so many of our lives. We want to make sure that we show our appreciation toward mothers every year.”

The concert will be from 6-9 p.m. and will feature TAD of Jazz and N’Fusion ft. James Crumb Jr.

“We hope that it will bring the community together number one, and number two that we’ll bring attention down to our amphitheater in that area to get more people on the Riverfront,” Melton said.

“We’re asking people to bring non-alcohol beverages, bring their lawn chairs, bring their beach towels.”
