11 to compete for ‘Boy of the Year’ honors

The YMCA of Selma and Dallas County will name the Paul M. Grist Boy of the Year during a banquet Tuesday, May 9 at 6:30 p.m. at the Selma Convention Center.

Selma Mayor Darrio Melton will be the keynote speaker.

Paul Marshall Daniels is the son of Phillip and Robin Daniels. He attends Dallas County High School and is a member of Westwood Baptist Church. He is involved in football, baseball, is the robotics mascot, Selma and Dallas County Youth Leadership, yearbook committee, Drama Club, Prom Committee, Beta Blub and DCHS Choir. Paul is a volunteer announcer and official for the Cahaba Center Special Olympics basketball, volunteers for ALL in Sports, is a foster home for dogs with Wannabe Rescued, recreational leader for Vacation Bible School, Westwood youth group and sanctuary choir and Westwood Baptist summer youth mission trip. He has been on the A or A/B honor roll for 11 years, was an all-state honorable in mention football, all-state second team football, all-county team in football, Accelerated Reading certificate and 10th annual Southeastern U.S. honor choir. Paul plans to attend college to get a degree in athletic training.

Garrett Grantham is the son of Shelby Grantham. He is a student at Meadowview Christian School and is a member at Elkdale Baptist Church. Garrett is involved in basketball, football, track, National Honor Society, Beta Club and Scholar’s Bowl. He plans to join the Air National Guard and attend Troy University to focus in computer science in software engineering. He plans to serve six years in the Guard while pursuing careers in software development.

Joshua Patrick HaskeLL is the son of Scott and Lynn Haskell. He attends Dallas County High School and is a member at Westwood Baptist Church. Patrick is involved in football, basketball, track, baseball, National Beta Club, National Honor Society, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, works with lifeguards at the YMCA, works with children and adults with special needs at the YMCA, maintains certifications as an American Red Cross lifeguard, first aid, CPR and AED, Mission Fuge Christian Outreach and producer with Dallas County Extension system and farmers market. He volunteers by teaching swimming lessons, being a Special Olympics coach and being a summer camp director at the YMCA of Selma and Dallas County, volunteers at the Selma Lions Club, Central Alabama Fair, Central Alabama Crawfish Festival and yard work for elderly in the community. Patrick has been on the A/B honor roll from 2013 through 2017, earned the athletic award for outstanding accomplishments in football and track, was the defensive captain and was named an all-county defense player. He plans to attend the University of West Alabama to continue his athletic career while pursuing a bachelor’s degree of science in health sciences with a physical therapy emphasis. He wants to return to Selma to help younger athletes upon graduation.

Greyson Harvill is the son of Troy and Patrice Harvill. He attends Morgan Academy and is a member of Elkdale Baptist Church. Greyson is involved in golf, director of football operations, National Youth Leadership Conference, Boy Scouts of America, National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, Selma and Dallas County Youth Leadership, Student Government Association, Duke TIP, 4H, Beta Club, Morgan Academy Accreditation Steering Committee, Scholar’s Bowl Team, Academic Challenge for Excellence, Robotics Team vice president and head programmer and Crimson Guitars School of Guitar Building and Guild. He volunteers at the Selma Animal Shelter, Battle of Selma School Days, four Eagle Scout Service Projects, Sunday School teacher, National Merit Scholar and is a math and history tutor. Greyson has received the Presidential Academic Achievement Award, Selma Country Club Golf Club 15, 16 and 17-year-old champion, Scholar’s Bowl District High Scorer, Eagle Scout and Pioneer Electric Youth Tour semifinalist. He plans to attend Auburn University and major in aerospace engineering and then earn his master’s in business administration at Troy University before going to work in the defense industry.

De’Quan Johnson is the son of Trisha Johnson. He attends Southside High School and is a member at New Life Annex No. 2. De’Quan is involved in football, basketball, baseball, track and field, Helping Young Men Network, Daughters of the American Revolution and Jobs for Alabama Graduate. He has volunteered his time at Tipton Durant Middle School for the summer league. He has been awarded with the player of the week, all state football team, all county player, player of the year and Capital Hyundai Player of the Week. De’Quan plans to attend Alabama State University and get his masters in computer engineering.

Dominique Jones is the son of Darrell and Regina Collins. He attends Keith High School and is a member at Rising Star Primitive Baptist. He is involved in football, basketball, track, JAG Program and was the varsity basketball co-team captain. Dominique volunteers his time at the Dallas County Animal Shelter and the Selma Light House Nursing Home. He has been on the A/B honor roll, has made second team all-state football and was the most valuable player in football. He plans to attend college and play football and one day play professional football. He wants to become a physical therapist and open his own practice in Dallas County.

Larry DeWayne McGary Jr. is the son of Regina McGary and Larry McGary. He attends Ellwood Christian Academy and is a member of Everdale Baptist Church. He is involved in baseball, football, track and field, soccer and is the president of the National Honor Society. Larry volunteers his time as a school office assistant and at Lighthouse Nursing Home. He has been given the Outstanding Academic Award and has received athletic awards. Larry plans to attend the University of West Alabama for sports management and then the University of Alabama at Birmingham for dentistry.

Frank Thomas Middleton is the son of Frank and Julie Middleton. He attends Morgan Academy and is a member at Westwood Baptist Church. Frank is involved in soccer, football, cross country, National Honor Society, National Junior Beta Club, National Senior Beta Club, Boy Scouts of America, Order of the Arrow and National Youth Leadership training. He has volunteered his time with Missions Fuge, Bethel Baptist Church, Westwood Baptist Church choir, Selma Lions Club and Jefferson Davis Mounted Artillery. He has been awarded the senior patrol leader, Order of the Arrow chapter chief, soccer captain, Eagle Scout and National Youth Leadership training. Frank plans to attend Auburn University or Troy University to obtain a degree in building sciences. He plans to use his degree to work with construction and construction management and eventually have his own company.

La’Darius Pasley is the son of Charlotte Pasley. He attends Keith High School and is a member of Saint Chapter Primitive Baptist Church. La’Darius is involved in baseball, math club, science club, debate team and robotics team. He volunteers his time to the JAG Program, Bogue Chitto Community Foundation, Youth Leadership Selma-Dallas County, Vaughan volunteer and Little League baseball. He has been on the A/B and A honor rolls from 2008 until 2017, he was awarded with the highest math average and held a health science internship. He also has participated in dual enrollment. La’Darius plans to attend Wallace Community College Selma to finish his associates of science degree in nursing then attend Concordia College Alabama to obtain a bachelor of science in nursing. He plans to become a traveling nurse and work toward getting his master degree in nursing at the University of South Alabama.

Rontterious Tabb is the son of Kanesha Tabb. He attends Selma High School and is a member at Lily Grove Baptist church. Rontterious is involved in football, wrestling, chess team, digital media and Future Farmers of America. He has been awarded a leadership award and Go Build Alabama Student of the Month. Rontterious plans to attend a four-year college and major in computer programing, as well as take up industrial electrical technology.

Ivan Terrell Williams is the son of Ivery Williams and Sharon Williams. He attends Selma High School and is a member at St. Paul Community Methodist Church. Ivan is involved in basketball, Skills USA Welding and Deca. He volunteers his time at Knox Elementary School, McRae Learning Center, provides lawn service for needed citizens and volunteers for Beautiful Feet Dance Studio. Ivan was awarded best shooter in basketball. He plans to attend Wallace Community College in Selma to pursue a degree in welding and under water welding. After completing the program, he plans to continue his education and become a certified welding supervisor.
