Administrators in the Dallas County School System have probably had better weeks. On Thursday, someone placed a phone call to Keith Middle High School and threatened a school shooting, forcing the school into lockdown. On Monday, Dallas County High School was evacuated after a bomb threat was phoned in at the school.

Thankfully, both were false alarms. That’s the most important thing.

It could be anyone on the other end of the phone, but whoever it is will likely be in a lot of trouble if they get caught. Mike Granthum with the Dallas County Sheriff’s Department said they are attempting to trace the calls so they can determine who made the threat.

If the call is traced back to the caller, that person could be facing charges of making a terrorist threat, which is a felony.

The act of making the call may sound like a funny prank to teenagers, but it’s far from it. This could be a life altering decision that would likely result in jail time and a felony record that will follow them around forever.

It’s also a waste of time for law enforcement officers, who could be responding to real crimes.

At this point, we don’t know who placed the calls to these schools, but you’d expect in most cases it’s probably a student or someone with a connection to the school that made the call.

We hope investigators get to the bottom of this, even if it’s only for the peace of mind for parents and administrators.
