Was it just us or did it feel like something was missing this weekend in Selma? When we first looked ahead to 2017, this was a weekend that was circled as one of the busiest of the year. We’re sure others did the exact same thing.

That’s because this weekend was the weekend that the 2017 Battle of Selma was originally scheduled before it was cancelled in February.

We’ve written extensively about why the battle was cancelled, so we won’t dive back into it here, but there’s no question it left a large void in the calendar for this weekend.

Of course, it was still a busy weekend. The Michael Johnson camp entertained hundreds of children at Memorial Stadium and baseball and softball was played on just about every ball field in the county, but the battle was still missing.

However, at least one part of the Battle of Selma still took place this weekend.

Old Cahawba Archaeological Park held a ceremony Saturday to remember Civil War soldiers who died in the battle.

Although it’s not the same as the battle reenactment, it still served as a reminder of the history of the war and the link it’ll always have to our city. It was also a chance to remember the price of war and to remember those who gave it all.

We appreciate the reenactors that came from around the area and out of town to keep this ceremony going.

Hopefully next year everything will be worked out and the Battle of Selma will be back, but this year Old Cahawba deserves a lot of credit for keeping this ceremony going.
