Polls will be open today from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. to decide the Alabama House of Representative seat that has been vacant since Darrio Melton was sworn in as Selma’s mayor.

Prince Chestnut won the Democratic primary back in January with almost 70 percent of the vote and will face independent challenger Tremayne “Toby” Gorden, who earned enough signatures on a petition to qualify for the election.

The district has been represented by Melton for the past two terms and includes all of Dallas County and parts of Perry County. The seat’s full-term will be back up for election in 2018.
