Improvements made to Meadowview Elementary

Meadowview Elementary School’s lunchroom has a new look after receiving a facelift during spring break.

The school’s cafeteria has been completely repainted, thanks to a collaborative effort between the school faculty, PTO, donations from local businesses and help from the Selma City School Board. Principal Allen Malone said the lunchroom looked drab, but now has an inviting feel, thanks to the red, green, yellow and blue paint on the wall.

“It was kind of dull and not very welcoming, no kind of bright colors,” Morgan said. “It was all one color so now we have a color scheme going on in there where it is really bright.”

The school received new lunchroom tables last year, and Morgan said the new tables made it even more clear that something had to be done with the rest of the lunchroom.

“If you can imagine new lunch room tables in a building that was not so attractive, so to be able to get fresh paint with brand new tables, we’re at the top again,” he said.

Morgan said everyone truly played a part. The businesses that helped out will be recognized as Tuesday’s school board meeting. School board member Danielle Wooten said all she had to do was ask and many people wanted to help out.

Wooten said she was told by a longtime school employee that the walls in the cafeteria hadn’t been painted in more than 20 years. She said over 80 percent of the money needed for the project was brought in through fundraising.

The school contracted with a Meadowview parent, Cedric Cleveland, who gave a discount to paint the ceiling, the foyer, the doors and the walls in the lunchroom for $3,000.

“It was a team effort,” Wooten said.

The students even had a hand in the transformation. Malone said faculty members polled students to find out which colors they wanted to see on the walls.

“We felt like if you involve the students they will show more pride in taking care of it after the fact,” Malone said. “They enjoyed helping to pick out the colors and it produced some collaboration between the students and between the teachers.”

The school is holding a clean-up day on Saturday from 8 a.m.-noon where several projects will be completed. Pine straw will be laid down, playground equipment will be painted and repaired and parts of the exterior parts of the school will be touched up with paint.

Wooten said parents are buying bales of pine straw from Four Seasons Garden Center this week, who offered the school a discount, to help with the project.  Murals will also be painted in the lunchroom.
