Job program back for youth

Each summer the city of Selma offers its summer youth job program, giving hundreds of young people a chance to earn money and experience.

The program is for people ages 15 to 22 and will continue this year. A total of 110 jobs —everything from clerical work, food service, day care and landscaping — will be given out this year through the job lottery.

The program allows young people to gain valuable work experience, while also earning a bit of cash. Earning that first job isn’t usually an easy thing and nothing replaces experience on a resume.

The summer job program will start June 13 and end July 20. Each person will work 16 hours each week at a rate of $7.25 per hour. The lottery will take place at 5:30 p.m. in the Selma Convention Center. Anyone who has their name drawn has to be present at the time of the drawing.

Applications must be submitted to the city of Selma Personnel Office, located on the first floor of city hall. Applications are due by April 14 at 4:30 p.m.

We encourage any young people out there looking for work to apply.

The jobs are only a few hours a day and the money earned will likely make the summer months a lot more enjoyable.
