The Selma and Dallas County Chamber of Commerce will soon be partnering with the Alabama Tourism Department to offer communities across the state free walking tours.

Selma will be one of 28 towns to offer the tours every Saturday in April as a way to get the community and visitors outside to enjoy the spring weather while learning more about the city.

“The chamber is really excited to be able to host the walking tours and be able to offer them as a resource to visitors and locals,” said Landon Nichols, marketing coordinator for the chamber.

“We’re excited to be able to offer these tours in April because we’re looking forward to the nice weather and hopefully we can all learn something new together.”

The tours will begin at the Selma and Dallas County Public Library on Broad Street at 10 a.m. each Saturday, and typically last around one hour. Nichols said the tours will primarily focus on downtown and Broad Street.

“It’s always really great being able to connect with our visitors and share stories of Selma and Dallas County with them,” Nichols said.

“Being able to share that on a one on one level is always very entertaining and enjoyable because not only do they get to learn something about Selma and Dallas County, but you get to learn something that you never knew as well.”

Nichols said he is excited to continue the yearly event and partner with the state.

“The chamber is really excited to partner with the state department of tourism and be able to offer this resource,” Nichols said.

Brian Jones, tour coordinator with the Alabama Tourism Department, said more than 32,000 people have participated in the statewide tours since the beginning of the program 14 years ago, and the popularity continues to grow each year.

“Alabama is the only state in the nation to hold statewide, simultaneous walking tours,” Jones said in a release. “These walking tours are a great way to get out and enjoy the spring weather and find out about the history of our state.”
