Literacy was alive, exciting and interactive at Byrd Early Learning Center during the school system’s annual Dr. Seuss birthday celebration.

On March 3, the Alpha Theta Kappa chapter of the Kappa Delta Pi Honor Society from Concordia College Alabama put on a theatrical performance of the much-loved Dr. Seuss story, “The Cat in the Hat,” to a group of Byrd kindergarteners.

As part of their KDP International Community Service Project, Literacy Alive!, the Seuss story was rewritten in play form and titled The Magic of the Cat in the Hat by Alpha Theta Kappa counselor, Dr. Jo Ann Summers.

Quantisha Battle, president of CCA’s Kappa Delta Pi Chapter, portrayed the beloved Cat in the Hat and performed magic disappearing tricks, making streamers appear as if from out of nowhere, and wowed students with a magic coloring book whose blank pages changed with just a flip of the page.

Other characters were played by CCA students Wonder Spivey who played the role of Sally, Brittany Walton who portrayed Sally’s brother, and Shanquise Hamilton and Kayle Foster who played the mischievous Thing 1 and Thing 2.

“We are always looking for ways to connect and work with our P-12 partners,” said Tonya Chestnut, CCA’s Division of Education Chair.  “We believe that education works best when we all work together to make learning for children our first priority.”

CCA’s KDP also contributed to the literacy project by donating two sets of Dr. Seuss books to the Byrd library to encourage children to explore the wonderful world of reading.
