One day after the Selma City Council voted to move forward with selling the historic St. James Hotel to FUBU pending final approval, the company has not yet heard back from the city.

When asked Wednesday to comment on what hotelFUBU saw in Selma and the hotel, COO and brand partner Cecily Groves declined to comment until the company received something in writing stating the city was moving forward.

Groves said she had a statement about the company’s vision and hopes for the hotel prepared but wanted to wait until the city sent them something in writing.

Mayor Darrio Melton, who was dispatched to negotiate a deal for the hotel, told council members Tuesday night the company would not budge on its $400,000 offer.

The company has offered to purchase the hotel for $400,000 and invest at least $3 million in renovating and updating the hotel.

HotelFUBU is a brand of FUBU, the clothing company that was started in the 1990s by Daymond John and three others. The hotel brand is licensed to FUBU co-founder Carl Brown and Groves for commercially developing boutique hotels.

“HotelFUBU is a boutique hospitality concept inspired by the redevelopment of historic properties as boutique hotels in cities that represent the soul of American culture and innovation,” according to a company statement.

“Redevelopment of historic properties that are supported and celebrated by their local communities set the stage for extraordinary ‘one-of-a-kind’ experiences only available at hotelFUBU.”

According to Groves, the brand was launched this year. It is unclear if the company has purchased any other hotels at this time.

“Our genuine commitment to and reverent respect for the communities we develop define and differentiate hotelFUBU from any other hotels,” Groves said in a statement.

“Guests enjoy the ‘upside of everything’ concept through amenities designed with 21st century innovators in mind executed with historic class, charm and inspiration. The hotelFUBU brand transcends lifestyles, generations and geographies to welcome travelers as the erudite choice for years to come. By refueling the mission of ‘for us, by us’ in commercial development nationally, hotelFUBU represents the rebirth of a generation determined to celebrate its history in order to secure its future.”

Text messages and phone calls to Melton were not returned Wednesday regarding when the city will notify hotelFUBU of moving forward.

Melton also told council members Tuesday night the company promised to use local contractors for work when possible.

The Times-Journal will continue to reach out to FUBU for comment on plans for the hotel.
