A newly renovated salon in Selma is hoping to make its customers feel like celebrities with the addition of several new services.

After closing for renovations, Celebrities Only Salon on Alabama Avenue is back open for business.

“We have come in and redone the place,” said Carroll Bonner, who co-owns the business with her husband Patrick. “We kind of shut it down for a few minutes and started back over, so this is actually the second opportunity here, but there are so many new things available here.”

Bonner said the salon used to only offer hair services, but the business has grown.

“We offer all haircare services, mani and pedi services. We also have a massage therapist that is licensed and a boutique where we sell purses and jewelry,” Bonner said. “There’s just so many things that’s going on.”

Bonner said the salon has added two new licensed designers and two apprentices, as well as a fully-licensed massage therapist to help expand its services.

“As the salon owner, I ended up taking a job in Montgomery, so the business was not as lucrative, and we weren’t offering all the services we are now,” she said. “I left my job to come back and boost the business, and so far, so good.”

Bonner said she hopes having a full-service salon in Selma will help people spend their money locally instead of having to go to places like Montgomery and Prattville.

Serving as cosmetology director for Virginia College in Montgomery, Bonner said she used to see a lot of people from Selma at different salons. She used that as motivation to revamp her business and keep people in Selma.

“I would see friends over in Montgomery getting their hair done,” she said. “That really concerned me, and I wanted to know why would you have to travel for services when they can be offered right there in the city.”

While the business offers services to its customers, Bonner said she hopes Celebrities Only can be more than just a salon.

“The main motive is to give our community a greater satisfaction. Our future hopes are to be able to do back to school bashes for our young people and have opportunities for us to service and kind of encourage them at the same time, so it’s not just a salon,” she said.

“That’s what we’re so excited about it. It’s about trying to help regroup and motivate our community, especially the youth.”

Since reopening in late January, Bonner said the business has seen an increase in clientele, and she is hoping to add even more clients.

Bonner said walk-ins are welcome, but most people book appointments. Celebrities Only is located at 604 Alabama Ave., which is near the Vaughan Smitherman Museum.
