National Signing Day has become a huge spectacle nationwide. There are endless hours of television coverage and blogs and websites speculate for years in advance where top prospects will end up signing.

Locally, it was much quieter on Wednesday, when four local players signed National Letters of Intent to play college football. Three of the four players attend Southside High School and the fourth was Paul Daniels from Dallas County. All four players, their parents and coaches should be commended for such a big achievement.

Thousands of high schoolers play football in Alabama each year, but only a select few get the opportunity to play in college. Southside’s Keandrae Rutledge, DeQuan Johnson and Chris Edwards helped raise the bar at Southside, which had one of its best season in years.

Johnson will be right down the road at Alabama State, Rutledge a few hours away at Fort Valley State and Edwards states away at Graceland University.

Daniels was a regular on the Alabama Sports Writers Association all-state team while at Dallas County and will head to Faulkner University.

All four players should be commended on their accomplishment and we wish them the best of luck moving forward.
