Parts of very ward in Selma could use a makeover, and that’s why the city has started a city-wide cleanup project that covers all eight wards.

The project started last week in Ward 8, and it will last through early March. Sean VanDiver, the director of public works, said the cleanup is an effort the make Selma a better place to live. We applaud the city’s efforts to beautify Selma. Work in Ward 8 is set to be finished today.

So far, crews from the public works, cemetery and recreation departments have torn down condemned houses, cleaned and edged sidewalks, picked up trash and cleaned out storm drains. Sean VanDiver said the crews have really stepped up in the cleanup effort and have been working hard.

Citizens should also get involved. VanDiver said the city is asking people to clean their ward up by picking up trash, so when crews start cleaning up they can focus on bigger projects.

We hope the city’s effort doesn’t end there. Hopefully the city will continually maintain each ward and make an effort to keep them clean after the eight week project is completed.
