Luginbill talks recruiting at QB Club meeting

One of the nation’s top recruiting gurus spoke at the final Selma Quarterback Club meeting of the year Monday night at the Selma Convention Center. Tom Luginbill, who works as a national recruiting director and an analyst at ESPN, talked to the club about how his job works. One thing he learned a long time ago — you aren’t going to nail every 5-star recruit.

“One of the things that makes things so difficult for college coaches is everybody expects you to be right all the time and it’s impossible. You are not going to be right all the time,” Luginbill said. “These college coaches are bringing in 25 17-year-old kids in a given class. If you are going to be right, you are hoping to be right on about 65 percent.”

Luginbill and ESPN evaluate about 3,000 players per class and he showed his knowledge talking about players around the country. Jarrett Stidham, a former 5-star recruit that transferred to Auburn on Monday, was easily the most discussed player.

Auburn fans are excited to have Stidham and the way Luginbill talked, they should be.

“On physical ability, I think he’s one of the most gifted kids I’ve ever been around at the quarterback position since I’ve been doing this at ESPN for going on 11 years,” Luginbill said. “He had the opportunity to play as a true freshman when Seth Russell went down at Baylor and he was exceptional,” Luginbill said. “It’s hard as we see with true freshman to make that leap. He made the leap graciously and with relative ease.”

Luginbill also hit on several other topics, including why he’s currently against expansion to the College Football Playoff, Alabama’s open offensive coordinator position following Lane Kiffin’s departure, why Nick Saban and Alabama are so successful in recruiting and how ESPN determines its recruiting ratings. He also think it’s pretty clear cut that Alabama is the best team in the country.

“I think we all agree here, whether you are an Alabama or Auburn fan, Alabama is the best team in college football right now,” Luginbill said. “With that being said, if you’ve ever heard the phrase most games aren’t won, they’re lost, the way to beat Alabama is for Alabama to screw it up. They have to do something to help you and then on top of that you actually have to have a football team that can athletically compete with them.”

The club also announced its big ticket winner on Monday night, with the winner taking home $10,000. All proceeds from big ticket sales went to the club’s scholarship fund.
