Code enforcement cracking down on offenders

The city of Selma’s Code Enforcement Department is cracking down on people who put their trash beside the road to get picked up.

Steven Hendrieth, the head of the city’s code enforcement department, said people have been putting their trash out well in advance of their pickup day or right after their pickup day. The trash then sits by the road for days and clutters our beautiful streets.

Code enforcement said repeat violators will be targeted. Those who break the code will be warned and those who break the law over and over will eventually be cited.

We appreciate that code enforcement and Hendrieth are making an effort to stop trash from sitting by the road for days at a time. However, we hope the department continues to put most of its focus on ensuring everyone has signed up for garbage service.

In September, we reported that the number of delinquent homes had decreased but still sat at 26 percent.

After all, the biggest problem the city has with garbage pickup is that some are still finding a way to avoid paying their bills or sign up for service.
