Two adults were shot and a child injured Sunday night in a shooting on Church Street.

According to Lt. Tory Neely with the Selma Police Department, the shooting happened around 7:15 p.m. on the 2500 block of Church Street when a man, woman and their three children were pulling up to their home.

“They were arriving at home with their three children,” Neely said. “A car pulled up on the block behind them. Two subjects got out of the vehicle and started shooting at them.”

The victims, Christopher Ward and his wife Carmille, were shot in the back. She was also shot in the buttocks, and their 8-year-old daughter was grazed on the arm.

Ward said he and his family were coming back home from getting dinner when the shooting happened.

“My little girl noticed the car was following us, and my wife also noticed,” Ward said. “My wife tried to jump out of the car to tell them don’t shoot, we’ve got kids, but they started firing.”

Ward was initially treated at Vaughan Regional Medical Center before being transported to Montgomery for further treatment. His wife was treated at Vaughan, and both have since been released.

“It’s outrageous. It’s not going to stop,” Ward said. “My wife and my kids were in the car. They could have been dead.”

Carmille said she tried to plead with shooters before they started firing.

“I was yelling please don’t shoot. My kids are in the car. My kids are in the car,” she said.

Neely said Sunday’s shooting is believed to be retaliation from a shooting that Ward was allegedly involved with.

“They’ve been having some on-going problems with another family here in Selma,” Neely said. “The day before one of the persons’ of interest in this case house was shot up, and there have been several shootings back and forth.”

Neely said no one has been arrested, but he expects multiple arrests will be made involving both alleged parties.

“We’re still investigating the case because Christopher and one of his brothers are a suspect involved in a shooting against the other party.”

Neely said one of the suspects’ mother’s house was shot at over the weekend.
