The Selma Parks and Recreation Department is expecting dozens of senior citizens to be at the East Selma Fish Pond Tuesday morning, when the pond opens for the first time this fall.
The pond, which is located on Plant Street, opens three times a week and is stocked with catfish and tilapia.
“We’ve gotten three to four calls every other day wanting to know when it’s going to open,” said Carneetie Ellison, director of the Selma Parks and Recreation Department. “We were trying to wait until the weather cools down a little bit and [Tuesday] should be perfect for them.”
On Tuesdays, the pond opens for senior citizens (people 50 and above) from 7 a.m.-noon. The pond also opens on Thursdays from 1 p.m.-5 p.m. and Saturdays from 7 a.m.-noon for people of all ages.
Ellison said there are so many fish in the pond that it didn’t need to be restocked.
“We are going to feed the fish to see how many we can get to come up,” Ellison said. “But we aren’t going to restock it for the fall. We are going to wait until closer to the spring when we open it up again and we will restock it then.”
Ellison said many people fish at the pond and it’s usually pretty busy out there.
“It’s free, we don’t charge anything and they love it. Especially the senior citizens,” Ellison said. “In the run of the day, it gives them something else to do.”
