Left. Right. Up the middle. It didn’t matter much for Paul W. Bryant Stampede, who ran where they wanted, when they wanted in a dominant 45-7 victory over the Selma Saints.

“We wanted to come out and focus on ourselves and do the little things right,” Bryant coach Eldrick Hill said. “It appears that we got better, but we’ll have to go back and look at the film and see what else we can do.”

Throughout the game, Bryant was essentially able to run the ball at will in the area victory, rush in for a grand total of 387 yards to move to 2-3 on the season.

“We saw some things (Selma) was doing up front, we just saw some holes,” Hill said of his team’s success on the ground. “We were able to put our guys in position to plays to take advantage of it.”

A variety of backs got in on the action, but at the head of the rushing attack was junior running back Gary Quarles. The Selma defense couldn’t seem to get a hand on the shifty back all evening as he rushed for 263 yards in not even three full quarters of action. Quarterback Justin Cannon also had a productive evening, throwing for three scores, each of which was directed to Seth Williams.

“This is a big win. Plus, it’s an area game too,” Quarles said. “It feels like a huge accomplishment because we’ve been working for this all week.”

While the rushing attack was the driving force behind the victory for the Stampede, the Bryant defense also was stout all night, barring one touchdown given up in the second quarter.

Selma running back Jonathan Pressley was one of the lone bright spots for Selma.

The senior rushed for 64 yards and scored the Saints only touchdown.

Looking forward, the Saints, still looking for their first win of the season, will host Summer Central next week. Paul W. Bryant will be itching to provide an encore to Friday’s standout performance when they take on Central Tuscaloosa in a rivalry game.

“We have a lot of talent but we have to keep jelling, keep working on the fundamentals and keep focusing for four quarters,” Hill said. “We just have to maintain the focus on the little things going forward.”
