The International Taste of Selma Cook-off will offer the community the chance to show off its cooking skills and enjoy some international fare.
The competition will be Saturday, Sept. 3.
The inaugural event is for teams and individuals, who are encouraged to create a dish from other countries and cultures.
“This competition is just a way to bring the whole community together,” said Kenyetta Banks, the event organizer.
Participants need to be at least 17 and older to take part in the cook-off. Anyone under 17 has to be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Participants also must bring their own equipment to set up.
Banks said that the proceeds from this year’s cook-off will fund next year’s event.
Banks also said that the inspiration behind the event came from many different ethnic groups in the city saying that there isn’t enough events that are geared toward them.
“There has been people who have been here for years, but you wouldn’t know it because they don’t come to a lot of the events because there’s nothing there that is welcoming to them,” Banks said. “We want people to know that Selma isn’t just black and white.”
Judges will pick winners based on creativity, appearance, originality and authenticity. Awards include cash prizes for first, second and third place. A People’s Choice Award will also be given.
“People should participate so they can get a sense of the community,” Banks said. “By doing this, you’d be representing Selma in a positive way.”
Sponsors are currently needed for the event, and the deadline for interested sponsors will be Friday, Aug. 26.
“I hope that everyone comes out and supports our city,” Banks said.
The cook-off will be from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Downtown Entertainment District, located on Water Avenue. Participants should pick up their registration forms at the Selma Police Department.
The registration deadline will be Aug. 26 at noon. Team registration is $10 and public admission is $2.
