The fourth annual Get Fit Selma 5K Run and Community Fun Run/Walk will be held Saturday, Sept. 17 at 8 a.m. at Wallace Community College Selma.
The event is sponsored by Taylor Internal Medicine, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and McRae Gaines Learning Center and will include both a 5K race and a 1-mile run.
A health fair will also take place, with registration being held from 6:30 a.m. until 7:30 a.m. Health screenings include blood sugar, blood pressure, weight checks, vision screenings and hearing screenings.
Once participants finish their health screenings, they will be allowed to enter the health fair where they will be provided with health information on various topics. Stephanie Hamm, chair of Get Fit Selma and board member and volunteer for McRae, said that this fair highlights healthy activity and healthy eating. She said the Black Belt and Dallas County have major issues with obesity and hypertension.
“There needs to be a change in our attitude toward what we eat and how inactive we are,” Hamm said.
The event is also geared towards children with the Let’s Move! Kids Challenge. Children will be able to participate in an obstacle course and a 3-on-3 basketball competition created by coach Winston Williams from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m.
Early registration fees for the 5K run are $10 for youth and students under 21 and $15 for adults 22 and older. Late registration fees for adults are $20. There is no late fee for youth and students. Fees for the 1-mile fun run and walk are $7. Late registration fees for the walk will be $10 for adults, and there is no late fee for youth and students. Early registration ends Sept. 15. Any registration packets sent through the mail must be postmarked by Sept. 13. They can be mailed to Angie McCary at McRae-Gaines Learning Center at PO Drawer 1266, Selma, AL 36702.
