Communication is so powerful. It’s powerful for good. It’s powerful for bad. We communicate when we try to communicate. We communicate when we try not to communicate. Communication is just so powerful and inevitable.

Because I believe communication is powerful, I try to communicate often. I try to communicate well. I try to communicate regularly. I communicate with the masses, with groups, with individuals, with God. I communicate in many ways, on many levels and via many mediums. Because communication is so powerful, I try to communicate for good.

I communicate in writing. I have written a Sketches for 1518 straight weeks without a miss for nearly 30 years. Sketches is published in newspapers, by email, by Facebook, by Twitter and by radio. I also write editorials, open letters and other occasional writings: I have written a piece for the Greene County Democrat’s Annual Black History Edition for decades. I know I cannot communicate just once and achieve meaningful good.  Therefore, I communicate over and over again at various intervals through a variety of mediums. I try to communicate for good because communication is so powerful.

I communicate by radio. I communicate weekly on certain radio mediums, more often in some and less often in others. Each week I co-host a radio program called Radio Sunday School.  It’s at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday mornings on Selma’s 50,000 Watt F M Radio Station Z105.3. Dr. Margaret Hardy is my co-host. We discuss the Sunday School lesson, making certain that it is fully spiritual while applied to daily challenges. I am amazed that so many listen to the program.  People approach me from as far as a hundred miles from Selma to say how much Radio Sunday School means to them. Communication is powerful so I try to communicate for good.

I call in on Radio Education at 9:30 a.m. each Sunday Morning on 1310 AM and 94.3 FM Radio stations in Marion. The Perry County School Superintendent, Dr. John Heard is the host. We discuss education and other issues. Sometimes I read a Sketches. Sometimes I make a Senate report. I always try to share with listeners concerning education and other areas of life.  Communication is powerful so I try to communicate for good.

Most weekdays I call in on the Faya’s Fire Radio Program hosted by Faya Rose Toure. I usually read a different Sketches each time I call in. Every Sketches I read is carefully selected.  I hope and pray that each one plants a seed of understanding. Because communication is so powerful, I try to communicate for good.

I co-host a radio program called Law Lessons with Attorney Malika Fortier. We do it each Wednesday at 2 p.m. on Z105.3 F M Radio Station. We discuss legal issues with persons who call in. People ask about their own personal legal issues and/or legal issues derived from experiences of their family, friends, co-workers, community and country.  Law impacts every facet of our lives. Therefore, I want everyone to better understand the law so we can progress in life. Because communication is so powerful, I try to communicate for good.

I participate in press conferences. I appear on other media programs. I do interviews.  These are not regularly scheduled but arise from time to time. Because communication is so powerful, I try to communicate for good.

I communicate over food.  Food enhances communication. Sometimes the communication is over lunch. Sometimes it’s over dinner. Occasionally it’s over breakfast. One food communication involves leadership lunch as we discuss leadership and its practical applications. Communication is powerful so I try to communicate for good.

I communicate with individuals in person and by phone. I recently counseled a young woman on communicating effectively with older persons. I really value my communications with young people. I believe the seeds of wisdom planted in the soil of youth produce bountiful fruits for years to come. Communication is powerful so I try to communicate for good.

I also communicate by speaking to groups of all sizes. I have spoken from Washington, D. C. on the East, to California on the West to Florida and Texas on the South to Detroit and Minnesota on the North and numerous places in between. I have spoken in Africa, Europe, Asia, South America and other places. I especially value speaking to youth. I recently spoke to a kindergarten and third grade classes. Communication is powerful so I try to communicate for good.

I understand that to communicate well, I must listen well. Someone said that God gave us two ears and one tongue so we should listen twice as much as we speak. Because communication is so powerful, I really try to “listen good” so I can communicate for good.

We never know the full impact of our communication. Sometimes our communications multiply in ways we cannot foresee and cannot fully comprehend even in hindsight. Therefore, we must do our best to insure that our communications are meant for good and designed for good.
