Selma All-Star teams playing for state

By Wednesday night, all five Selma All-Star baseball teams could be moving on to their respective state tournaments.

The AAA 9-and 10-year-old All-Star team beat Grove Hill 12-2 Friday and Thomasville 9-7 Saturday. The AAA team will play at the Sportsplex Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. against the winner of Thomasville and Eclectic. Selma’s 9-and 10-year-old team will then need to avoid losing twice to advance to the state tournament in Enterprise.

The 11-and 12-year-old O-Zone All-Star team also has a good chance of advancing to the state tournament, which will also be played in Enterprise. The O-Zone team had two games to play against Grove Hill on the road, one of which was played Monday night. Selma’s O-Zone All-Star team also needs to avoid losing both games to Grove Hill to make it to the state tournament.

If either the 9-and 10-year old or 11-and 12-year-old teams lose twice to their opponents they will go to sub-state in Montgomery July 5-8. The state tournament in Enterprise is scheduled for July 15-20.

If both teams advance to the state tournament, they would join the Selma AA 7-and 8-year-old team, Selma 13-year-old Dixie Juniors and 14-year-old Dixie boys as the five teams representing Selma at a state tournament.

“It’s unheard of that all your divisions from 7 and 8 all the way up to 14-year-olds go to the state tournament,” said Selma recreation department director Lebo Jones. “It’s looking good that that might happen, so we’re real pleased with the talent we’ve got in Selma.”

The 11-and 12-year-old O-Zone All-Stars haven’t lost a game all season, and head coach Jerome Hand is confident his team will be able to punch its ticket to state.

“The pressure is really off of us because now we’re going to go somewhere,” Hand said.

“We’re going to play baseball in July, but these boys want to win and I feel pretty good about our chances.”
