Kay Cecile Moorer Stevens, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend, returned to her Heavenly home on Monday, June 13, 2016.

Kay was born on Friday, August 13, 1937, in Selma, to Cecil and Kitty Moorer. She graduated from Selma High School and then received a degree in education from the University of Alabama. She was a proud member of the Phi Mu sorority.

After college, and a short teaching stint in Pensacola, Florida, Kay went to Dreux Air Base near Paris, France, and taught at the American School for the Deparment of Defense. While in France, she met the love of her life, Lt. R.H. “Steve” Stevens. They had an exciting courtship there and married a year later at the American Cathedral  on Georges V Avenue in Paris near the Champs-Elysee.

Kay and Steve moved to Houston where Kay taught World History at Memorial High School and then Westchester High School. She quit teaching to stay at home and raise her two daughters, Courtney and Elizabeth. Her girls were her number one priority until the day she died.

Kay was active in a number of civic and charitable activities in Houston and around the state. She has been active in the American Quarter Horse Association as a member of the Foundation Council. She was a past member of the Blue Bird Circle and became very fond of the Brookwood Community.

She loved the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo where she supported her husband, daughters and sons-in-law in their committee work. She served as First Lady of the Rodeo  from 2012 to 2014. She represented the show with grace and dignity and demonstrated the true charitable intent of the organization. Kay was honored to have received the prestigious Pearl Award in 2013.

While a graduate of the University of Alabama, she loved the Texas A&M Aggies. She traveled far and wide with her husband  in support of their athletic and academic endeavors. She truly bled maroon, especially after her daughters became Aggies.

Kay was a member of Chapelwood United Methodist Church. She also  enjoyed the Thursday morning bible study at St. Martin’s Episcopal Church, led by her sister-in-law Janie Putman. She made many dear, special friends within this group.

Kay loved to travel, read, entertain, laugh with friends and be with her family. She could always be found in the kitchen cooking. She was always up for a party. She was the life of every party. She was full of love, light, energy and happiness. She exuded kindness everywhere she went and never met a stranger but nothing in this world meant more to her or brought her more joy than her grandchildren. “Mimi” shared a special relationship with each one of them and her love for them was deeper than any ocean.  They laughed together, loved together and shared a mutual adoration for each other. They were her everything.

Kay was predeceased by her parents, Cecil E. and Kitty Moorer, and her in-laws Harroll and Marie Stevens. She is survived by her husband of  50 years, R. H. “Steve” Stevens Jr.; her daughters, Courtney (Jim Bob) Taylor and Elizabeth (Robert) Becker; and her loving grandchildren, Katie Taylor, Robby Taylor, Robby Becker and Campbell Becker. She is also survived by her sister, Betty Tucker of Selma; her sister-in-law, Janie Putman; her husband, Frank; nephews, Scott and Steve Putman; and nieces, Lucy Clarke, Cecile Hayslip and Pam Jacobo. Kay leaves behind many cousins and family members and countless friends who all were touched by her radiant light.

No one will forget her great laugh or her beautiful smile.

Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family on Sunday, June 19 from 5-7 p.m. in the library and grand foyer of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston.

The memorial service is to be conducted Monday, June 20 at 11 a.m. at Chapelwood United Methodist Church, 11140 Greenbay Street in Houston.

The family will gather for a private interment at Memorial Oaks Cemetery in Houston.
