Another busy weekend ahead in Selma

It’s going to be a busy weekend in Selma, but there’s plenty to do for anyone in and around the city.

Jazz on The Grazz will be held from noon-10 p.m. at Phoenix Park, located on Water Avenue across from the St. James Hotel. At noon there will be a spot for children to play and a DJ will begin playing music. Vendors will also be available, giving families a chance to enjoy lunch together on Water Avenue while listening to music.

The festivities continue from there, with a recycling contest that will be judged at 1:45 p.m. Anyone that participates in the contest will have the chance to win cash prizes.

The main stage for Jazz on the Grazz begins at 3:45 p.m.

Down the street at the Edmund Pettus Bridge, a Juneteenth celebration will take place to recognize the 157th anniversary of the end of slavery.

The Ceremony of Remembrance will begin at 4 p.m. and will be immediately followed by the Celebration of Freedom at the Civil Rights Memorial Park.

We’ve written reminders about the hot weather several times this week, but Saturday’s weather might be the most unpredictable yet.

There’s a slight chance of rain and the high temperature is set for 89 degrees.

Anyone that plans to be out in the sun needs to remember to drink plenty of water throughout the day and to wear sunscreen of at least SPF 15 to prevent against heat-related illnesses.

Pack an umbrella or raincoat for any potential rainfall.
