The Selma Country Club is gearing up for its 88th annual Men’s Invitational this weekend.
The tournament will take place Friday–Sunday. Selma Country Club PGA golf professional Tommy Burns said it’s a rare three-day tournament for the club and will require focus throughout the weekend to win first place.
“You can’t win the tournament on the first day. If they want to win the tournament, they’ve got to make sure they get in that championship flight,” Burns said.
The tournament will have a shotgun start — meaning every golfer starts at the same time at a different hole — at 10 a.m. each of the three days. The 54-hole tournament will take place in flights, and the winner of the championship flight will win a crystal bowl.
The winners of all flights will be eligible to win gift certificates and other prizes.
Burns said 68 golfers have registered for the tournament so far. The tournament is open to members and guests, and Burns said 75 percent of people who have registered are from out of town.
“When the warm weather gets here, people want to get out,” Burns said.
The last two flights will play with a Stableford Dogfight format rather than using stroke play. In Stableford Dogfight, there will be one point for a bogey, two for par, four for a birdie and eight for an eagle. There are no negative points, so golfers can speed up play by picking up their ball once they are guaranteed a double bogey or worse.
