The Selma Public Library will be offering a Baby Sitter Bootcamp class this summer, open to open to boys and girls ages 10 to 17.

“A couple of people, I read, that they were actually looking for a baby sitter, but they did not feel comfortable with their children being at home alone even though they had older teenagers because of the fact that they did not have the proper training,” said Glenda Shaw, who organized the event.

Shaw has been a nurse for 23 years, instructor with the American Heart Association, has taught CPR for 15 years and is a mother of two.

The course will be free, and participants have the option of paying $45 to learn CPR and get a two-year certification from the American Heart Association or First-Aid.

The participants will also be divided up into varying skill sets and into small groups.

“They’re going to have hands on training with a mannequin, knowing how to hold a baby, knowing safe toys that are appropriate for the appropriate age groups. They’ll learn how to do a resume, learn how to conduct themselves during an interview, knowing what to wear to an interview.”

So far, Shaw says that mostly teenagers are interested in the course in hopes of getting a babysitting job during the summer.

The class will take place at the library on June 4 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m and no prior registration is required. Participants will receive a T-shirt and a light lunch provided by a local pizza company. For more information, you can call (731) 277-5483 or the library.
