A 39-year-old man died soon after a crash that caused his S10 pickup truck to flip multiple times and eject him from the vehicle Saturday night between 8 and 9 p.m.

Darren Dwayne Bryant, from Montgomery, was racing at Selma Motorsports Park, when another truck in the race hit him from behind. There was an ambulance already on site that worked quickly to transport him to a hospital in Montgomery.

Dallas County coroner William Alan Dailey said Bryant died in the ambulance on his way to Baptist Medical Center South in Montgomery.

“They started treating him immediately, but his injuries were just too severe, and they weren’t able to keep him alive on his way to Montgomery,” Dailey said.

The crash is currently being called an accident by the Dallas County Sheriff’s Dept., which is still in the process of investigating the case. Dailey said Bryant’s wife was watching the race when the crash happened. Dailey said Bryant had been racing for around 10 years, according to his wife.

“He was pretty familiar with racing,” Dailey said.

Dailey said the Selma Motorsports Park generally has races every Saturday during the summer. There is no word on whether the races will continue this weekend. Efforts to reach someone with the racetrack for comment were unsuccessful.

District Attorney Michael Jackson said this is the first accident of this kind he can remember at the Selma Motorsports Park.

“I don’t know if they’ve had any fatal accidents,” Jackson said. “I’m sure they’ve had wrecks, but this is the first time I remember being a fatal accident out there.”
