Local athletes medal, qualify at state meets

Southside’s Chris Davis’ reached 43 feet and 11-and-a-quarter inches, earning him second place in the triple jump finals at the Alabama High School Athletic Association state track meet Friday in Gulf Shores.

“Of course he wanted the number one spot, but he competed well and he was in high spirits about it. He was reflecting upon last year and his progression and he’s happy,” said Southside head coach Jeremy Sturdivant.

Plenty of other high school athletes from the Selma area competed and qualified for final events Friday. Keith and Ellwood athletes competed in the class 1A-3A state track meet in Cullman, while Southside, Selma and Dallas County competed in the 4A-7A state meet in Gulf Shores.

Keith’s 4×100 boys’ relay team placed third in its heat with a 46.56, qualifying for the finals with the sixth best qualifying time out of eight teams that qualified. The Ellwood boys’ 4×100 relay team fell short with a 48.71, coming in fourth in Keith’s heat. The best time was Winterboro’s relay team, which ran a 45.58.

Keith’s Quomila Johnigan won her heat with a 1:03.68 in the 400 meter dash, finishing sixth overall to earn three points for her team.

Jeremiah Campbell qualified for the finals in the 100 meter dash for Keith, completing the race in 11.47 seconds and finishing fourth overall in the event. The top time was a 11.19.

Keith’s Tyeshia Malone fell just short of qualifying in the 100 meter dash. She ran a 13.22 and the final qualifying time was a 13.18.

Ellwood’s Brianna Dower also missed the cut-off line to qualify in the 100 meter hurdles.

As of Friday night, results were not posted for the class 1A 200 meter dash, which included Ellwood’s Macio Johnson and Travis Goldsby.

In Gulf Shores, Selma’s Johnathan Pressley failed to qualify for finals in the 200 meter dash, running a 22.90. Dallas County’s Caleb McDougal threw the discus 116 feet, two inches. The total landed him in ninth place, one position away from receiving points.

“This was a hard competition for him, and he did throw well. It’s just he was going up against so many guys that throw so well,” said Dallas County head coach Cliff Nix.

Southside’s Antonyah Dudley also was unable to score points in the girls’ shot put, but she, as well as many other athletes from the Dallas County area, have another chance Saturday.

Dudley will compete in the discus at 8:30 a.m. Dallas County’s Tynesha Jones will also be up bright and early, as her high jump competition starts at 8:30 a.m. as well.

Davis and Southside’s Azrenda Pettway compete in the boys’ high jump at 11:30 a.m.

In Cullman, Ellwood ‘s Jasmine Morgan will compete in the girls’ shot put at 8 a.m. and Rayshawn Simmons’ shot put event starts at 11 a.m. Keith’s Eric Smiley and Malone will run the boys’ and girls’ 800 meter dash, respectively, at 2 p.m. Finally, Ellwood’s 4×400 boys’ relay team will run at 3 p.m.
