The statewide Scale Back Alabama program, which has challenged citizens to lead healthier lifestyles through dieting and weight loss, will soon come to an end for this year.

More than 300 Selma and Dallas County residents participated through either the YMCA of Selma and Dallas County, Vaughan Regional Medical Center or the Dallas County Extension Office.

Locals who participated in the program weighed in at one of those three locations the week of Jan. 25. Participants will have to go back next week to weigh out.

County Extension Coordinator Callie Nelson said during the program she has seen many people make progress on weight loss journeys.

“I think some people have been doing really well. We’ve had people to come in and weigh themselves throughout the program. Several of them have lost weight and already met the goal of losing the 10 pound minimum, but wanted to keep going,” Nelson said.

She said the office held a midway weigh out day about five weeks ago where people could come in and see their progress halfway through the competition.

People can weigh out for the last time April 10 through April 15. Times vary between the three sites.

The Dallas County Extension Office, located at 429 Lauderdale St. in Selma, will be open to teams Monday, April 11 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday from 9 a.m. to noon, Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Thursday from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m. to noon.

The extension office will also offer weigh outs in Orrville next week on Tuesday, April 12 from 1-3 p.m. at Salem Elementary School and Friday, April 15 at the Orrville Community Center from 1-4 p.m.

Teams can weigh out at the Selma/ Dallas County YMCA located at 1 YMCA Road in Selma on April 11 through April 15 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Vaughan Regional Medical Center Human Resource Director Dionne Williams hopes people will have lost weight when they get back on the scales.

“Working at the hospital, we see a lot of patients with health issues that are related to weight. It’s very important that we offer this program and encourage people to be healthy,” Williams said.

The medical center, located at 1015 Medical Center Parkway in Selma, will hold weigh outs Monday, April 11 through April 15 from 8-9 a.m. and 4-5 p.m.

Everyone who registered for the competition has been given ten weeks to lose a minimum of 10 pounds. Teams where both members have lost a minimum of ten pounds will be entered to win cash prizes up to $1,000.
