Animal shelter in need of air conditioning

“Selma’s Purrrfect Pals” does its best to help cats and kittens at The Selma Animal Shelter, but as the weather heats up, so too do the potential problems of finding a place to put the cats.

Shannon Lynch with “Selma’s Purrrfect Pals” is working toward trying to raise money for a new air conditioner/heater in the kitten room at the Selma Animal Shelter. The unit has been in deteriorated condition over the past few years, and now it has stopped working.

With the weather warming up, all the cats at the animal shelter are left to roam in the front room, but a lack of adoptions is leading to overcrowding in the room. With kitten season and warmer weather on its way, Lynch doesn’t see the problem getting any better unless the sufficient funds are raised for an air conditioning unit.

“Spring is going to turn into summer, so when the temperature starts going up, the only way to be able to put extra adoptable cats in there is the air conditioning for the room to be cool,” Lynch said.

As of last week, Jacque Johnson with Selma’s Purrrfect Pals said she was still trying to raise $538 to cover cause to cover the cost.

On Saturday, the Selma Animal Shelter held its monthly adoption, but Lynch said no cats were adopted.

Lynch said last summer, the cat room was used very sparingly because the air conditioning unit wasn’t blowing cold air.

This summer, the room might not be used at all.

“If it’s too warm, we can’t put any cats in there,” Lynch said.
