The Alabama Bass Federation will return to Selma Saturday with a fishing tournament at the marina. The tournament marks the organization’s first stop in Selma since 2013.

The federation has a five-tournament schedule with four qualifiers and then a state championship tournament in September at Weiss Lake in Cedar Bluff.

The Selma tournament is the second qualifier of the year.

“The Alabama River is a good fishery and Selma is one of the launch points we like to use,” said Alabama Bass Federation president Jim Sparrow. “It’s a change-up and it gives the fisherman an opportunity to fish different parts of the river.”

Sparrow said registration was still ongoing Tuesday afternoon, so he couldn’t release a number of how many anglers will be in the field this weekend.

Registration doesn’t end until noon Friday.

For the majority of tournaments, more than 100 fisherman take part, Sparrow said.

Since this weekend is Easter, he isn’t sure how that will affect attendance.

The last time the tournament was held in Selma, 64 anglers competed.

Sparrow said several local anglers have registered for the tournament.

To compete, anglers have to be a part of a club that is affiliated with the Alabama Bass Federation and a member of the Fishing League Worldwide.

Practice days will be held for the tournament Thursday and Friday.

The tournament will start Saturday when there’s enough daylight to safely launch boats into the water. Weigh in will be held at 3 p.m.
