Two Keith players make all-state girls team

Published 12:27 pm Saturday, March 19, 2016

Two Keith girls’ basketball players were named to the Alabama Sports Writers Association’s class 1A all-state team on Saturday.

Keith senior Harriet Winchester made the class 1A first-team after averaging 17.7 points and 6.5 rebounds per game this season. Winchester also made the first team last season, when she was a finalist for 1A Player of the Year. During her freshman and sophomore years, she was named an honorable mention on the class 1A all-state team.

Winchester is a Troy signee and scored more than 2,000 points in her career.

She is joined on the team by teammate Zykia Pettway. Pettway averaged 14 points and 10 rebounds per game for the Bears this past season.

Pettway has college offers from Stillman College and Wallace Community College Selma.

Pettway and Winchester led Keith to Birmingham, home of the state semifinals and finals, three times in their careers.

Keith won the 2015 Class 1A championship, played for the championship in 2013 and made it to the state semifinals this season. The Bears lost to Spring Garden in the state semifinals.

Other members of the class 1A girls’ team are Pleasant Home’s River Baldwin, Berry’s Taylor Jones, Spring Garden’s Tykeah Rogers and Linden’s Amber Richardson.

Along with Pettway, the class 1A second team includes Berry’s Karlie Milligan, Decatur Heritage’s Savanna Naylor, Lochapoka’s Normesha Pitts and Spring Garden’s Madison Sides.

The ASWA all-state boys team will be announced on Sunday.
