Morgan boys and girls tennis teams sweep Fort Dale Academy

Between the boys and girls tennis teams, the Morgan Academy Senators played a total of 22 matches against the Fort Dale Academy Eagles Friday at the Selma city tennis courts.

The Senators didn’t lose a single match.

The Morgan boys nearly swept through Tuscaloosa without dropping a game Friday, as five of the seven matches finished 6-0, 6-0. The girls weren’t far behind in their victory over the Eagles, as they didn’t allow three or more games to be scored in a single set in all seven matches.

Willis Watt Jones started at No. 1 singles, defeating his opponent 6-0, 6-1.

The next four lines of singles — No. 2 George Jones, No. 3 Mason Perkins, No. 4 Will Brackin and No. 5 Kareem Hammad — all won their respective matches 6-0, 6-0.

Willis and George only dropped one game in their No. 1 doubles match, rolling to a 6-0, 6-1 victory. Brackin and Perkins were perfect in the No. 2 doubles match, clinching a 6-0, 6-0 win.

Ellie Adams got the start for the Morgan girls at No. 1 singles, where she cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 victory. Emily Sherrer won at No. 2 singles 6-1, 6-1. Sophie Talton was the lone girls singles player who didn’t allow her opponent to win a game, as she secured a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles. Annie Talton followed with a 6-2, 6-0 victory at No. 4 singles, and Mary Ashlyn Pearce rounded out singles play strong with a 6-1, 6-2 win.

Sherrer and Sophie beat their No. 1 doubles opponent 6-1, 6-0, and Adams and Annie triumphed 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 doubles.

The girls were equally impressive in their exhibition matches.

At No. 6 singles, Lilly Youngblood won her match 8-1. Maggie Youngblood was victorious at No. 7 singles, as she defeated her opponent 8-2.

Hannah Lightfoot didn’t drop a game at No. 8 singles en route to an 8-0 win.

Mallory Mathews won 8-1 at No. 9 singles. Judy Assad added to the Senators’ dominating day with an 8-0 victory at No. 10 singles. Rachel Johnson capped off the singles success with an 8-5 victory in the No. 11 singles match.

Lilly and Maggie won their exhibition doubles match 8-2, and Mallory and Judy took their exhibition doubles match 8-1.

The Senators face Monroe Academy next Friday at 2:30 p.m. at the Selma city tennis courts.
