Wallace women lose in semifinal

HANCEVILLE — The Wallace Community College Selma Patriots women’s basketball team lost Thursday to the Shelton State Buccaneers 111-49 at Wallace Community College Hanceville in the semifinal round of the Alabama Community College Conference tournament. With the win, Shelton State punched its ticket to the National Junior College Athletic Association tournament.

Wallace head coach Herman Turner said Wednesday he believed with a loss, the Patriots season would likely be over. Without being ranked in the top 25 in the NJCAA all season, he said Wallace won’t have a chance of claiming an at-large bid to the tournament. The winner and runner-up of the ACCC tournament earned automatic bids.

Wallace led Shelton State 8-7 early after Jaquetta Street knocked down a free throw and a layup. The Buccaneers responded with a 15-0 run to grab a 22-8 lead.

Likely and Amber Ward each hit two-point shots in the final minute of the quarter to cut the Shelton State lead to 24-12 at the end of the first quarter. Frenika Craig made a pair of layups in the second quarter, but the Buccaneers extended their lead before halftime. Shelton State led Wallace 49-25 at halftime and put up 35 points in the third quarter to lead 84-41 at the end of the third period.

The Patriots were held to just eight points in the final quarter, as they suffered a 62-point defeat.

Shelton State will play Wallace Hanceville Friday in the conference finals.
