Softball camp this Saturday

Last Saturday, the Selma Parks and Recreation Department and All in Sports Outreach held a baseball camp for the city’s youth. This weekend, softball gets its turn.

The Complex will host a free softball camp from 9 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. for kids ages 7-12. City of Selma baseball director Jamie Tellier said he is looking forward to how the camp prepares the players and the coaches for the season.

“I definitely think it’s going to give the coaches for our softball league a head start since a lot of the coaches that we have coaching out there in the city league are going to be out there helping. So they’ll be able to see where the girls are early on and to not have to start from scratch when the season actually rolls around,” Tellier said.

Like the baseball camp, the age groups will be split into 7-8, 9-10 and 11-12. The 7 and 8-year-olds will have a camp that runs from 9 – 10:30 a.m. The 9 and 10-year-olds start at 10:30 a.m. and go until noon. The 11 and 12-year-old girls will begin their camp at noon and end at 1:30 p.m.

Tellier said he expects many of the girls who show up to be ones who have already signed up for the city’s softball league, but he encourages everyone to come even if they are unsure of how they’ll perform.

“Come out to the camp and try to learn something and maybe it will change your mind,” Tellier said.

At Saturday’s baseball camp, Tellier said he had 10 baseball players sign up for the city baseball league at the baseball camp. He hopes for a similar result with the softball camp.

Registration for the softball camp opens Saturday at 8 a.m. Tellier encourages girls who want to participate in the camp to preregister before Saturday at allinsportsoutreach.org.

“We’re excited about it,” Tellier said. “I’m pretty pumped up about it. Hopefully this will be the start to a good season.”
